![]() ![]() That approach can work, the famous example in literature is the Thomas Covenant series, where the protagonist basically gets isekai'd and chosen one'd but rejects the call for most of the first trilogy due to not believing it is real and fear that acceptance of his newfound health will damage his leprosy survival techniques. At least that's how it seems to me as someone who's only seen bits and bobs of each as well as audience reactions. And that is the subtext I felt in the snippets of dialogue I saw from Forspoken: "Haha, ya, we know this is stupid and silly." If you're the audience for an Isekai that takes itself seriously, that's gotta leave you at least confused: Wait, what - I thought I was here for the fantasy, not to laugh at it?Īnd that's why Hi-Fi Rush probably works, and Forspoken doesn't: Rush has audience and writers share a perspective (they're laughing with each other), while the audience perspective and the writing perspective in Forspoken seem adversarial (one seems to smirk down at the other). It wasn't that article, but thank you for linking it! It was an interesting read, especially because it picked up on my own experiences as a writer in a gaming space (I wrote for a magazine, though, not a game): I found not few of the writers there to have disdain, and a few even disgust, for the material they write about. If you took individual clips from each film they might seem identical, but when looking at the movies as a whole they effected the overall experience differently. However, after the serious trailers for Age of Ultron, many people felt that the focus on comedy or snarky one-liners in the resulting film detracted from it. Using Marvel movies as an example, I've heard very few complaints about cheesy dialogue or silliness in Guardians of the Galaxy because that fits the tone that people were expecting. People were primed for a certain tone when they looked at each game and one fit that tone while the other arguably didn't. Its "Marvel" style dialogue can therefore seem to clash with the other elements of the game. Forespoken has a more muted, realistic style and seems to be a more serious, dark, fantasy epic of a title. It seems to be going for light, wacky vibes. Hi-Fi Rush is a cartoony, comic book styled, rhythm game. The artstyle, general presentation, game genre, plot, and thematic focus of the two games all gives players a perception of what type of tone is expected and welcomed. I think it's a combination of many things. Quick edit because I'm getting a lot of hate mail: I don't actually think the majority of people dislike Forspoken for having a minority character, However after seeing an amount of discussion on it I wanted to preemptively bring it up just so the people that do think that wouldn't think I'm ignoring the possibility I thought people could be grown-ups for discussion and just say "I don't think so" or "yeah" The elephant in the room: Do you feel there is another "angle" at play here? (Racial, misogynistic, etc)ĭoes the artstyle play any role in how dialogue is interpreted? (Not a joke question as I keep seeing this get brought up, so here we are). What makes the cheesy dialogue work in HiFi Rush vs Forspoken?Īre we even in agreement here that both games contain cheesy dialogue? You can take out of context lines from Hi-Fi Rush and Forespoken and you wouldn't be able to tell them apart.Īfter sitting on this for a few days myself, I honestly think this is worth a discussion. I really didn't understand why people were dunking on Forespoken for things that people like Hi-Fi Rush for, the jokes the semi constant dialogue the Marvel smarm. Really the title, I actually enjoy both games. r/CoOpGaming - A community for co-op gaming r/xboxone - Xbox-specific subreddit for general Xbox news and discussion r/playstation, /r/PS4 & /r/PS5 - PlayStation-specific subreddits for general PlayStation news and discussion r/pcgaming - PC gaming-specific subreddit for general PC gaming news, discussion and gaming tech support r/nintendo - Nintendo-specific subreddit for general Nintendo news and discussion r/shouldibuythisgame - Find out what's worth getting. r/gamingsuggestions - Go here to help you find your next game to play r/gaming4gamers - Discussion, bar the Hivemind Top-level comments must be at least 100 characters in length.Accounts must be at least one month old.External Links must follow these guidelines No topics that belong in other subreddits This subreddit shouldn't be used for advice of any kind. ![]() ![]() Use sufficient detail and examples from multiple sources.Clearly define the purpose of your post.Engage in good faith with the points the person you're replying to is making. No discrimination or “isms” of any kind (racism, sexism, etc).Discuss GamingĪll discussion must be about gaming 2. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() Monjack died in May 2010 of similar causes which makes this case especially curious. At the time a Los Angeles County Coroner, Craig Harvey, said all drugs Murphy was taking before her death were prescription medications and the manner of death was ruled an accident. My comments were made in the hopes that somebody might hear them understand what the current approach is costing the project. It is not worth getting into a back and forth. The problem is all the “teenagers and total noobs”. The project is not hostile or condescending. ReactOS is exactly the kind of project I would love to contribute to if only the project were a bit friendlier. Even with the project as it is, I wish them luck and look forward to their success. It is exciting to see ReactOS implementing 64 bit as this is essential for running much of what end-users will want to run these days ( a somewhat current web browser as an example ). It is interesting that you say “Linux is creeping up in gaming” as I would say that is mostly happening because WINE / Proton are supporting the Win32 API on Linux. The API is quite stable generally and WINE keeps up with a lot of what does change. Windows does add to their API but the pace of change outside of GUI frameworks is not really that blistering. With so many people and companies that would benefit from a ReactOS that was further along, it is almost a miracle that they have succeeded in attracting so little support and participation. Those that rely on these things need ReactOS. The same is true for the enormous universe of hardware that has only Windows drivers. Not only that but, increasingly, much of this software can no longer be run on current Windows. Having an Open Source home for this treasure trove is important. There is an absolutely immense number of Windows-only applications. That said, despite my pessimistic description, I am an enthusiastic supporter of the ReactOS mission. While ReactOS does not want to distract themselves even getting a browser working, the SerenityOS folks have created an entire web browser from the ground up ( including support for HTML, CSS, JavaScript, SVG, audio, and video ). PixelPaint in SerenityOS has layers and supports an array of image formats ( all written 100% within the project ). ReactOS is touting improvements to their Paint program. Starting with a single developer, they have built a complete OS from scratch along with an impressive app ecosystem. SerenityOS has made just enormous progress in a very short period of time. I cannot help but compare their approach to something like SerenityOS with its “Hello friends” founder, engaging YouTube videos, detailed monthly updates, frequent interviews and conference presentations, and developer “office hours”. But harder than what other projects are tackling? I am skeptical, especially given that absolutely massive advantage that they get from WINE. They are doing hard things in their spare time I understand. The end result is that progress is glacial. If you are not going to help, go away.” though they are mostly abandoned with the communication that does happen moved to Mattermost ( good luck figuring that out from the website ). Adults are doing things you could not possibly understand. ![]() The forums are bursting at the seems with “Stop bothering us. The project is positively hostile to its community. At the stage it is at, why hold back releases literally for years? The communication has been consistently terrible forever. I’m not so sure I see where ReactOS fits in if the OS it’s trying to replicate is so pointless these days.Īs somebody that does not contribute to them at all, ReactOS has to be one of the most frustrating projects for me in terms of how it is managed. I’m at the point where I literally only see Windows as being useful for gaming and for updating the firmware on radios and wireless game controllers… and these days, Linux is even creeping up on gaming. Meanwhile Linux itself is getting so much better in so many ways, and it is amazing how for it’s come in the last two decades or so since I’ve been experimenting, using and tracking it. And it’s chasing a desktop that lost relevance in my mind many years ago. Windows as a target keeps moving, even breaking itself from version to version, and ReactOS is still unstable, incomplete alpha. I actually forgot ReactOS even existed, and to be honest… I’m not sure I see a point in it anymore. Back in the early 2000s and maybe up to 2010-2015 I had some interest in ReactOS, but I haven’t used Windows itself since 2004-2006, and I couldn’t be happier. The longer I am away from Windows, the less I care about ReactOS. ![]() ![]() ![]() Earning achievements can also unlock Avatar awards. ![]() Originally there were forty milestones but on January 6, 2010, it was raised to fifty via a title update and was raised again to 60 on September 8, 2010, via a title update.
